The questions people ask before they need to ask us.

BootTask is designed to guide attention without making the web unusable. These answers cover the most common workflows and fixes.

Getting started

What is BootTask?

BootTask is a Chrome extension that helps you decide what you intend to work on before browsing takes over. You plan tasks, choose one to make active, and keep its time and controls visible in the Focus Bar as you work.

How do I start my first task?

Open the BootTask Dashboard from the extension, add a task, optionally set a duration and useful sites, then choose Choose and start. Your active task appears in the Focus Bar while you browse.

Do I need the Mac app to use BootTask?

No. The Chrome extension is the core BootTask experience: tasks, timer, Focus Bar, browsing guidance, and optional Google Drive sync. The Mac app is an optional companion that adds the BootTask Gate when you log in or return to your Mac.

Which browsers does BootTask support?

BootTask is built for Chrome. Browser-store versions may also be available for compatible Chromium-based browsers. The optional Mac Focus Gate requires macOS.

Tasks & focus sessions

Can I pause, switch, or finish a task?

Yes. Open the Focus Menu from the Focus Bar to pause the session, switch to another unfinished task, or mark the current task as done. Your task list remains available in the Dashboard and BootTask Side Panel.

What happens when the timer ends?

The timer is a signal, not a punishment. You can add time, pause, switch tasks, or finish when you are ready. BootTask does not lock you out of your work.

Can I add time to an active task?

Yes. Use the +1m, +5m, or +10m controls in the Focus Menu. These controls stay available while a task is active.

What is Free Surf?

Free Surf is a deliberate session for unrestricted browsing. Choose a duration and browse freely. When you stop Free Surf from the Focus Bar, BootTask takes you back to the Dashboard.

Why are completed tasks not visible in the extension popup?

The Extension Popup intentionally shows only the current task and unfinished tasks, so choosing what to do next stays simple. Completed tasks remain available from the Dashboard.

Focus Bar & BootTask Side Panel

What is the Focus Bar?

The Focus Bar is the persistent control bar shown at the top of pages during an active task, break, or Free Surf session. It shows the current task, time, and quick actions without covering the page content.

Where did the Focus Bar go?

First check that a task, break, or Free Surf session is active. Then reload the page and make sure BootTask is enabled for the site in Chrome’s extension settings. Some browser pages and restricted pages do not allow extensions to inject interface elements.

Can I make the Focus Bar smaller?

Yes. You can reduce it to the Focus Pill and restore the full Focus Bar when you need it. The Focus Pill is designed to remain available without getting in the way.

How do I open the BootTask Side Panel?

Click the BootTask extension icon in Chrome to open the BootTask Side Panel on the right side of the browser. Clicking the task in the Focus Bar also opens it.

Browsing guidance

What happens if I visit a site outside my task?

If your active task has useful sites configured, BootTask can ask whether the new site belongs to the task. You can allow it for the current task, choose another task, or return to your work.

Why can I browse freely when my task has no sites?

That is intentional. A task without configured sites means browsing remains open; BootTask does not treat it as being outside your task.

How do I enable or disable Intercept?

Open BootTask Settings and use the Intercept setting. It is optional and disabled by default. When it is off, navigation is not blocked; the Focus Bar can still offer helpful options.

How do I allow a website for a task?

When BootTask asks about a site, choose to allow it for the current task. You can also edit the task in the Dashboard and add useful sites there.

Optional Mac Focus Gate

What does the BootTask Gate do?

The BootTask Gate is the choice screen shown by the optional native Mac app after login, after a real wake, or when returning to your session. It asks you to choose your active task before your desktop pulls you elsewhere.

Why does the Gate appear after I log in, rather than before?

Normal macOS apps cannot appear before the system login screen. The Native Gate starts after you have logged in to your Mac.

Can I use the Mac Focus Gate without the extension?

The Mac app works best with the extension, which remains the source of tasks and focus-session behavior. Install Chrome BootTask first, then add the Mac app if you want the Gate.

Premium & billing

What is included in the free plan?

BootTask is free for up to 10 unfinished tasks and includes the Chrome extension, task timer, Focus Bar, Free Surf, optional Google Drive sync, and the optional native macOS companion.

What does Premium unlock?

Premium unlocks unlimited unfinished tasks, recurring tasks, enhanced Chrome history suggestions, and everything included in the free plan. A lifetime payment unlocks the current Premium features.

I bought Premium, but it is not active. What should I do?

Open BootTask Settings and check that your license key was entered exactly as received. If it still does not activate, contact support with the email used for purchase and the error message, if any. Do not include your full license key in the message.

Privacy & data

Where is my data stored?

BootTask stores your tasks, session state, settings, and related data in Chrome storage. Google Drive sync is optional and only used when you choose to connect it.

Does BootTask read my browsing history?

Only if you grant the optional history permission. In that case, BootTask uses recent history locally to suggest useful sites for a task. It does not send your browsing history to a BootTask server.

How do I delete my data?

BootTask does not keep a copy of your task data on its own servers. To remove local data, uninstall BootTask and clear its Chrome extension data. If you chose to use Google Drive sync, you can also delete your own BootTask spreadsheet from Google Drive. See the Privacy Policy for more detail.

Is my data safe during the beta?

BootTask has already been tested extensively, but no beta software can be completely risk-free. Remaining bugs, updates, or sync issues may cause task data to be lost, altered, or unavailable. Do not rely on BootTask as the only copy of important information; keep a separate backup. See the Beta notice and Terms of Beta Use.

Troubleshooting

BootTask is not working as expected. What should I try first?

Reload the affected tab, open Chrome’s extension manager to confirm BootTask is enabled, and update to the latest version from the Chrome Web Store. If the issue continues, restart Chrome and send us the details below.

Why does BootTask not appear on some pages?

Chrome restricts extensions on some pages, including certain browser settings pages, the Chrome Web Store, and other protected pages. BootTask cannot show the Focus Bar or guidance there.

What should I include in a bug report?

Please tell us what you expected, what happened instead, the site where it happened, and your Chrome and BootTask versions. A screenshot is useful when possible. Never include passwords or full license keys.
